US-based electronic giant Microsoft has finally confirmed that its Xbox One will support Sky and Virgin Media electronic programme guides (EPG) in the UK. This will become possible after the company will release its next update, which it had earlier promised to roll out before the World Cup scheduled to start on June 12 2014.
This will enable the Xbox One owners to directly access EPG from the device itself, and you no more require a Sky or Virgin Media box for it to work either. It can now be said that Microsoft is on the right track to be your portal to Brazil this summer.
The company has also mentioned that EPGs will be pulled from other set-top boxes too. The owners are just required to plug the box into the Xbox One’s HDMI input, and it will automatically display all the information through.
The people are presently allowed to view set-top box content via the Xbox One, but the lack of EPG support disables you to take advantage of Kinect’s voice controls to go directly to your channels of choice.
After the roll out of the update, the viewers will be enabled to tweak the guide in several ways. The starters can set HD channels as their default option in order to avoid SD versions of the same channel from cluttering up your guide.
The update will also enable you to save a favourite channels list for each Xbox profile, resulting in disabling cartoon channels from interrupting your favourite movie and sports channels.
Meanwhile, the update will allow additional channels to appear in the guide, right from Twitch streaming content, to TED talks and gaming clips recorded to Microsoft’s OneDrive service.
Microsoft faced lots of criticism for its decision to sell an Xbox package sans Kinect, but the upcoming update in June that will enable voice control powers to your channel surfing could be a game changer.
Nintendo was a major playing in the launch of fitness games way back in 2008 with its ‘Wii Fit’. Now, they have also launched an upgraded version of Wii U system functioning in collaboration with the previous Wii Balance Board as well as the new Fit Meter, which is a round shaped doodad that tracks real world activities like elevation changes and steps taken.
The Wii U GamePad is a portable one and eliminates the hassle of having to look at the TV screen every time. However, apart from a handful of games utilizing controller as well as a newly launched dance mode, the available content is usually the same as the outgoing ‘Wii Fit’ version. Yet, the newer accessories itself make the ‘Wii Fit U’ a good substitute to all other high priced fitness gadgets.
Enhancements done in motion tracking with the new Kinect senor of Xbox One notwithstanding, the Xbox Fitness, which is more like an app than a game, presents like a pounce backward from previous year’s ‘Nike + Kinect Training’. This functioned as an integral part of Nike+ system and deployed the Xbox 360’s edition of Kinect.
‘Xbox Fitness’ is essentially a series of some great workout videos promoted by celebrity trainers like Tracy Anderson, Jillian Michaels and Tony Horton.… Read the rest
As 2012 drew to a close, gamers all over the world got a wonderful new year treat in the form of Far Cry 3. And now, after sending out teasers for the past one month, Ubisoft will finally release its much awaited FPS Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon on the XBL Marketplace. The launch trailer of the game sure looks exciting, and we’re sure the game will be even better.
The game is based on Sergeant Rex Power Colt, a cyborg soldier, who lands on a remote island trying to save the world from the clutches of an evil madman. Hollywood’s Michael Biehn stars as the lead player in the game.
Its theme is reminiscent of the 80s – taking inspiration from the action movies, cartoons and the overall culture of this period. To win the game, players have to hunt animals and demolish camps of the enemy using a wide range of weapons in their arsenal. But in this version of the game, the animals take on the form of cyborgs and the enemy’s encampments have green forcefields which can be destroyed using laser weapons.
And of course, the game features Blood Dragons as a double edged sword – players need to protect themselves against them but can also use them to take down the cyborgs. As of now the game can only be downloaded digitally on PCs, PS3s, and Xbox 360 consoles.
The Wii U was one of the most talked about launches in the gaming console space during 2012, but then things got quieter once it did come out. Even though the Wii U has a slower processor than its competitors like the Xbox 360 and the PS3, don’t get too disheartened. In terms of graphics, this baby’s got a much more powerful GPU made by AMD.
Here are a few screenshots from the Wii U screen that show its performance:
The one strong point though lies in Nintendo’s inclusion of a tablet game controller element as well as asynchronous gameplay capabilities in the Wii U. However, don’t expect the Wii U to run as smooth when it comes to playing multiplayer games on a large screen TV. The console just isn’t as powerful to handle so many devices. But at $349, we’d say it makes for quite a steal, especially for single player games, while the Xbox 360 and PS3 cost $399 and $599 respectively.… Read the rest
No sooner did Microsoft unveil the Surface RT tablet that the tech world got abuzz with rumors about a gaming tablet from the Microsoft stable. The company is apparently designing a 7-inch tablet specifically for gaming, bringing together its gaming console with the new range of tablet PCs. This device could be called the Xbox Surface and unnamed sources at Microsoft have stated that it is right now in the initial hardware planning stage.
This isn’t the first time rumors about Microsoft’s gaming tablet have come out. It started back in June, but Microsoft has offered no comments yet. The tablet could run on a stripped-down version of Windows and could be powered by a custom ARM processor and high-bandwidth RAM. The tablet could also perform typical tablet operations like messaging and browsing, but the focus would be purely on gaming.
There are also rumors about the gaming tablet could be built in a factory that manufactures other Surface devices, unlike the next-gen Xbox consoles that would be produced by current Xbox partners, Pegatron and Foxconn. Some of its components could be developed in Microsoft’s Silicon Valley offices, as there are reports of a security lockdown at Xbox-related buildings within the facilities. If these rumors do hold true, we can expect the Xbox Surface to come out before Microsoft unveils its next-gen Xbox console, which is due to come out during the second half of 2013.… Read the rest
Celebrities associating with their favorite game is not new. But when a game such as Halo 4 decides to unveil its details, the stakes just get bigger…
Paving its way, there are a number of celebrities who are endorsing this new game and the latest in line is ‘The Social Network’ director David Fincher who has especially flown toPragueto set up a two-minute trailer for this new game.
An avid Halo fan, Fincher’s addition to the team is now surprising considering the fact that Microsoft (which is backing 343 Industries) is renowned for its magnanimous preparations related to each of its products. In the very obvious absence of Rockstar’s GTA 5 which was initially scheduled for a Fall 2012 launch, Halo 4 becomes the most anticipated and biggest release of the year 2012. But having said that, one has no intention of taking it away from the team who has also roped in Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter to voice a couple of characters in the game. They have also connected themselves with the ongoing Presidential elections offering the ‘warrior armor’ for players who would be watching three of the four debates on their Xbox consoles. Now, adding Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to your marketing line-up can’t fail that badly! The company has employed its marketing skills innovatively to promote its new venture.
The Fincher-directed trailer would be launched on October 18 on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ and would also feature the special effects input by visual effects expert, Time Miller, renowned for his work on ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World’. The trailer is bound to get the pulses racing with details about the new threat which is going to haunt the Master Chief. The combination of Miller and Fincher is bound to bring in a boost to the Halo 4 franchise which is following a storyline on Requiem with John-117 and Cortana leading the pack. The trailer would be available on Halo Waypoint and the Xbox YouTube channel as well. With the number of celebrities climbing on the Halo bandwagon, the game is romping in like a juggernaut.
An online web action series has already begun and has been garnering its own share of brickbats and bouquets. A number of actors such as Tom Green, Anna Popplewell, Daniel Cudmore have also been involved with it as well. The game which has spurned a number of launches including novels, miniseries and artifacts along with Halo-branded consumables, is now becoming a legacy for the modern gamers. It is gaining popularity as a collectible and with a range of celebrities endorsing this multi-million franchise, the ‘Halo’ is going to shine for some times to come.
