  • Log in to the Gmail account

  • Click on ‘Save Changes’ by scrolling down to the bottom of the page

  • Select ‘Ask before displaying external images’

On iOS

  • Open the Gmail app and log in if not already done
  • Click on the hamburger icon (≡) in the upper-left
  • Tap on ‘Settings’
  • Choose the email account you wish to configure
  • Tap on ‘Images’
  • Switch from ‘Always display external images’ to ‘Ask before displaying external images’

How to stop email tracking in Microsoft Outlook

The web browser does not let you stop the images from loading. However, you can use its service to load them. Here is the process to enable that:

  • Tap ‘View all Outlook settings’ at the bottom
  • Choose ‘General’
  • Click on ‘Privacy and data
  • Find the ‘External Images’ option below and choose ‘Always use the Outlook service to load images’

  • Open Microsoft Outlook
  • Click on ‘File’
  • Go to ‘Options’
  • Choose ‘Trust Center’ in the ‘Outlook Options’ window
  • Check the boxes labeled ‘Don’t download pictures automatically in standard HTML email messages or RSS items’ and ‘Don’t download pictures in encrypted or signed HTML email messages’ 
  • You may check on the remaining boxes if you deem fit after reviewing the same

Stop email tracking by using browser extensions

There are several browser extensions as well that can be used to identify the emails that use trackers and accordingly will block those. However, you need to tread carefully when using a browser extension as it may scan your emails. It is better to use script blocker and ad blocker extensions to limit online tracking.

Stop email tracking by using an email client

There are certain email clients like Thunderbird, which can be used to stop email tracking. They block remote images by default. The application lets you download embedded content on an individual basis. It also allows you to download pictures from known contacts whom you can trust not to send images with hidden codes.
