OnePlus Event Held in Bangalore; Smartphone Assembling to Begin Soon

OnePlus Bengaluru EventOnePlus announced new plans at an event in Bengaluru today and said they would be assembling smartphones in India. The Chinese startup is partnering with Foxconn to start assembling from the latter’s manufacturing unit located in Andhra Pradesh.

“Today is a big day for us. Producing smartphones in India is one of the most important decisions that we have made so far at OnePlus. India being one of our biggest markets worldwide, we are committed to a long term sustainable growth path,” OnePlus CEO and Founder Pete Lau said at the event.

The company has already sold 250,000 units of OnePlus One and 15,000 units for OnePlus Two in India. The latter had its first-ever open sale on today. It will continue tomorrow as well.

OnePlus General Manager-India Vikash Agarwal said, “Ever since OnePlus debuted in India, we have been deluged with requests for invites to buy our products, with more than 5 million registrations worldwide for our latest release – the OnePlus 2 – alone! With the best of our intentions of fastening up the availability process, we have been constrained by a few supply chain related challenges in meeting consumer demands. The local production will help to address this issue and better cater to the fast growing demands for OnePlus products in India.”

The MakeInIndia move would give full time employment to more than 1000 people at the Foxconn’s facility spread across 30,000 s.ft., where the manufacturing of OnePlus devices would start before the end of 2015.

Locally produced OnePlus smartphones will hit the market as early as the end of this year. Foxconn has the ability to manufacture about 500,000 units at its facility per month, which is further scalable according to the demand.

Facebook Innovating With Good Morning, Updated News Feed

Did you wake up to a good morning message from Facebook today? Facebook Inc is in an innovation mode to enhance user experience. Recently, they updated the News Feed feature that would allow content to load quickly even when the internet connectivity is weak. Today, they gave users a surprise with a personalised good morning message that said, “Good morning Nishtha, we hope you enjoy Facebook today”.

Facebook morning news updateRecent moves from Facebook suggest they are targeting developing markets. Trying to provide solutions for places with slow internet connectivity is a result of that.

Internet connectivity is slow in emerging markets like Brazil, Mexico and India where most people use 2G connection. This makes it difficult to load videos or pictures that require more data. Facebook is hoping to bring in more users from these countries with this update.

The Facebook app chooses pictures, articles or videos to load depending on the signal strength of users. In case of a weak connectivity, News Feed selects content that is faster and easier to load.

Facebook’s director of engineering Tom Alison said that their employees working in India reported problems of slow connectivity that makes it frustrating to use the app. Thus, the social networking site sent a team to India to look into this matter exclusively and to deliver a faster experience for News Feed in regions with weak connections.

Alison said, “News Feed is a product you tend to want to check regularly throughout the day, and that’s not possible when it’s slow to load.”

The updated News Feed will be able to pull up content in low connection area, even in a subway, by pulling up stories that were loaded during their last Facebook visit but not clicked.

US Official Supports Surveillance on the Eve of European Union Data Ruling

A senior US official said, “US intelligence does not conduct mass, indiscriminate harvesting of foreigners’ private data,” on the eve of an EU court ruling, which is deemed to affect several companies including Facebook and related websites.

Robert Litt, who is the legal adviser to the Director of National Intelligence, firmly invalidated all allegations suggesting that Prism, an US surveillance program, allows US officials to look into personal data and information on vast scale.

Litt went ahead and wrote in the Financial Times, “Prism is focused and reasonable. It does not involve ‘mass’ and ‘unrestricted’ collection of data.”

The existence of Prism was leaked in the year 2013 by Edward Snowden, a former NSA agent. This revelation instigated Max Schrems, an Austrian student, to file a complaint with the Irish Data Protection Commissioner to challenge the transfers of European user’s data to US servers by Facebook.

This case is now being heard in the European Court of Justice, which will be ruled on Tuesday. The ruling will be done on the validity of the total legal framework, called Safe Harbour, which lets more than 4000 firms, from airlines to social media groups to transmit data to the US from the EU.

With the abolishment of Safe Harbour, every kind of transfers would be either restricted or become more expensive and time consuming, under EU laws that forbid data-sharing with nations considered to have lesser privacy standards like the US.

US officials are eagerly waiting for the outcome to decide ways to collect data in the future. The commission is expected to give a news conference on Tuesday at 1500 CET in response to the ruling. … Read the rest

Moto X Play vs. One Plus 2: What Suits The Pocket

The war is on between Moto X Play and OnePlus 2–the two preferred phones available for the mid budget buyer. Let’s do a quick comparison to see what side the features sway against the prices.

Design and Display

Lets look at the similarities first. Both phones have a 5.5-inch full HD display. However, the display of OnePlus 2 appears washed-out whereas the panel of the Moto X Play looks better.
At the same time, while the Moto X Play is better in terms of design, the Sandstone Black finish of the OnePlus 2 is more appealing. Both the devices are available with alternate back covers.

Weighing 169 gms, the Moto X Play  is lighter than the OnePlus 2 that weighs 175 gms. However, the Moto X Play is thicker and shorter than OnePlus 2.

Moto X Play vs. One Plus 2

Processor, Performance, Memory and Battery Life

While the Moto X Play runs on 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 octa-core chipset, the OnePlus 2 is powered by a 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 octa-core chipset. With 4 GB RAM, OnePlus 2 may get a little bossy over 2 GB RAM of Moto X Play. Though, OnePlus 2 enjoys an upper hand due to better synthetic benchmarks, there is very little difference if you consider day-to-day performance, making competition tougher.
Some reviewers have noticed that the OnePlus 2 tends to gain heat if games are played for a long time. Moreover, many apps face compatibility issue with the phone. Moto X Play users have not reported these issues. Battery of both the phones lasts a day of medium to heavy usage.

Moto x Play boasts of a 21 MP rear camera with dual-LED flash and auto-HRD, whereas the One Plus 2 comes with a 13 MP rear camera with OIS, dual LED-Flash as well as auto-focus.

Price Point

The price difference between both the phones is high. While the Moto X Play can be purchased for Rs. 18,499, the OnePlus 2 needs you to shell out Rs. 24,999.
With both the phones having a good fan following, it is difficult to say who is going to win the battle in the market. Based on our observations above, I would go with the Moto X Play though!
