Google has been testing the Google Maps Dark Mode for Android since September last year and is now rolling out the feature globally. With the full-fledged Google Maps dark mode on Android, users will not only be able to save battery but will also prove beneficial for the eyes.
The Dark Theme will enable users to save battery life and the greyscale interface will reduce eyestrain. Google Maps dark mode feature is a part of a slew of new features announced by the company for Android users globally.
How to Update Google Maps Dark Mode on Android?
The dark mode, which takes things much further than the previously available night mode color option, will be accessible in the app’s settings menu, under “theme.” To check for the new dark mode on Google Maps
- Go to Settings
- Tap on Theme
- Here, look for the Always in Dark Theme option
Google Maps Dark Mode for Android wears a pill-shaped lookup field and comes with different search suggestions. It also has a bottom bar along with buttons, as well as a switch to turn to light gray. There is also a soft blue colour used to mark the current tab and even for the directions FAB. The darkest shade of grey is used for the underlying map layer/background and the streets and names are slightly lighter. All pins and icons have been accordingly adjusted to fit.

Along with dark mode on Google Maps, the company is also rolling out the Password Checkup feature for Android handsets to alert users about potential leaks or data breaches that may have exposed existing passwords to cyberbullies. Currently, the feature is integrated into Android phones running Android 9 and above. The tech giant is also rolling out the ability to schedule messages on its Messages app. Even, Android Auto is getting a split-screen feature that will put Maps side by side with media controls. Android Auto is also getting custom wallpapers and games. For instance, when on long drives, you and your friends or partner can stay entertained and enjoy voice-activated games like trivia and “Jeopardy!”. The games can be accessed through the assistant. Just say, “Hey Google, play a game” to get started.
