Recently Facebook has been in news for all the bad reasons. After the WhatsApp fiasco over Privacy Policy, Facebook received a lot of criticism for wanting their hands on all personal details of WhatsApp users. But now, it seems that the company is trying to save itself by working on Android-based smartwatch. The Facebook Android smartwatch is said to go on for sale in 2022.

Facebook Android smartwatch is said to a standalone device and will integrate its messaging services and come with cellular connectivity. It seems the company is planning to compete with Apple and Google.The Android based smartwatch will let wearers send messages using Facebook’s services. It will also offer health and fitness features.

According to a new report published by The Information, Facebook Android smartwatch will be able to to hook up to cellular networks without tethering to a smartphone. If the report is to be believed, then it looks like Facebook is working on to build its own smartwatch ecosystem, that will allow wearers to send messages using Facebook’s services.The Information also states that “Facebook hopes to emphasise features that utilise its social networking prowess, such as allowing users to track their workouts with friends or communicate with their trainer” and that Facebook “plans to allow the device to connect to the services or hardware of health and fitness companies, such as Peloton Interactive.”

The Facebook Android smartwatch will be part of the company’s hardware ecosystem, a network that currently comprises Oculus virtual reality headsets along with a series of video calling devices – Portal, that includes Portal TV, Portal, Portal+, and Portal Mini.There is still no clarity on whether the Facebook smartwatch will run on Google’s Wear OS or something else. It is believed that the company is currently working on developing its own OS for its future hardware, which could debut with the second-gen smartwatch expected to arrive in 2023.

The Facebook smartwatch is said to offer health and fitness features, quite similar to what other smartwatches in the market offer. However, what’s interesting is that this Android based smartwatch could reportedly allow users to send messages using Facebook’s services – Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and social media platform Instagram.
