In such a scenario, Blackberry is eyeing to monetize all major patents to move the company forward.

BlackBerry’s first quarter results have revealed that they have seen massive profits from the monetization of IPs. The licensing and software-based revenues have seen a hike by more than 150 percent and currently stands at $137 million.

The big deal is

The profits follow a couple of new licensing deals BlackBerry has etched with Cisco Systems Inc and with another unannounced company. Chen states that the main challenge lies in creating a balance between securing its patents and monetizing the same using collaboration-based licensing deals. He says, “If you go too far and become too aggressive, you become a (patent) troll.”

He also stated that if monetization is gradual, then it consumes a lot of extra time but the time factor is a way more important factor than one thinks. Therefore, the need of the hour is to strike a healthy balance.  For now, Blackberry plans on heightening its innovation and staying at the top of its game in the field of secure communications. Microsoft NY Event to Release Lumia 950 Phones With Surface Pro 4?

Word is out that Microsoft has started sending out invites for its Windows 10 event slated for October 6, at Moynihan Station in New York. The event will see high profile launches for the Lumia 950, Lumia 950 XL and the Surface Pro 4 tab. In addition, the event will also see release of the much-anticipated Microsoft Band.

About The Launches

It is now placing all its bets on the Surface Pro 4, given that the preceding model had been a stellar success.

We do not expect the Surface Pro 4 to be hugely different from the Surface Pro 3. From the reports we have gathered so far, it’s also possible that Microsoft will retain the same form factor and charging system as the Pro 3. However, it could enhance the display resolution and start working on a sleeker build. Rumors suggest Microsoft will include an all-new fingerprint scanner on the device. This is something to look forward to.

Microsoft has already declared that the Surface Pro is a hit with buyers. According to fresh buzz, it is expected that Microsoft could release a 14-inch variant of the Surface device as well. Perhaps this is a bid to compete with the iPad Pro from Apple.

The Windows 10 Story

Windows 10 saw a launch two months back and despite roadblocks is steadily climbing popularity charts. The new testing and software runs suggest that Windows 10 has a much better built than the debacle Microsoft 8. It is also working decently across the mobile and tablet platforms besides the standard computer.

Harry Potter-Style Cloak Coming Soon!

For all those who are under the Harry Potter spell, scientists have confirmed that the invisibility cloak is now a reality. Scientists at the US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and the University of California, Berkeley have published that they have been successful in creating an ultra-thin invisibility cloak made from microscopic rectangular gold blocks that manipulates light.

The cloak can be wrapped around any object to make it invisible to the naked eye. The blocks act like skin and cling to the shape of the object underneath so that it can remain undetected using visible light.

The Details Revealed

US scientists invisibility cloakPublished in Science journal, the study also suggested that while these experiments involved cloaking small objects as of now, there will be tests on larger and more real objects so that the technology can be put to use even on a military scale.

Specs of the invisible cloak

What we know so far is that the cloak is 80 nanometres thick. Also, the surface of the cloak can reroute light waves scattered onto it to hide the object underneath. It could take five years or even a decade for this technology to be put to practical use, says Xiang Zhang, Director, Materials Sciences Division of US Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and a professor at the University of California, Berkeley.

At the experimentation stage, light with a waveleangth of 730 nanometers was reflected towards the sample object. The light bounced off the object without revealing it, the scientists have said.

While designing the cloak, scientists have also ensured that the nanoantennas are engineered in a manner that it adjusts to the shape of the object. This also ensures that the object does not move and retains invisibility.

The German invisibility box

Meanwhile, some KIT scientists in Germany are also working on a box that can be used to hide small objects. Robert Schittny, who heads the research project said, “It is a macroscopic cloak that you can look at with [the naked eye] and hold in your hands.”Read the rest
