Smartphone major Apple recently launched the much-needed iOS 14.5 update. With this update, users are expecting Apple to fight bugs, inattention to detail, poor performance, and security issues. We weigh in what it actually offers.
A look at 10 features in iOS 14.5 you can use every day.
10 Best iOS 14.5 Features
iOS 14.5 brings a ton of useful new features to your iPhone. Apple’s latest software version introduces several fresh features that will change the way you use your phone — for the better. Let’s see how you can use them.
1. Unlock iPhone with Apple Watch
We know Apple has the Face ID. However, now that we are wearing masks, the feature doesn’t really work. With the new iOS 14.5 update, users will now be able to make their iPhone work just the way Mac works. They can automatically unlock the iPhone with their Apple watch so they don’t need to touch the mask.
2. Dual-SIM 5G support
iOS 14.5 has introduced global support for 5G in Dual-SIM mode on the iPhone 12 models. The Dual-SIM feature on the iPhone 12 allows for two lines of service on a single iPhone. This is useful for traveling. It is also helpful for those who use the iPhone’s Dual-SIM functionality to keep separate work and home numbers.
3. Arranging and printing reminders
iOS 14.5 has a new feature where you can organise your reminder list using a variety of criteria. You could do it manually with the default settings. You could also use Due Date, Creation Date, Priority or Title to arrange your reminders. An added advantage, you can print the Reminders lists too.
4. App tracking is more transparent
With the new iOS 14.5 update, your iPhone will now require applications to ask for permission (via a standard iOS prompt) whenever they want to track your activities outside the app, and on other apps and websites.
5. AirPlay 2 for Fitness+
Apple Fitness+ subscribers will now be able to AirPlay their workouts to a compatible AirPlay 2-enabled smart TV or set-top box. You can now display your workouts on a bigger screen since iOS 14.5, iPadOS 14.5, and watchOS 7.4 enable AirPlay 2 support for Apple Fitness+.
6. Siri becomes more capable
A new Siri capability allows you to request Apple’s virtual assistant to call for emergency services. Once the update is installed, users will get a big three-second countdown on the screen to cancel the request. With this, Siri will be set to call the local emergency services number on speakerphone.
7. Enhanced Controller Support
With iOS and iPadOS 14.5, all Apple users can now sync the latest PlayStation 5 DualSense and Xbox Series X controllers with the iPhone and iPad. It is also quite likely that the Apple TV will support the new controllers with the tvOS 14.5 update.
8. Podcast & news app design tweaks
The Podcast and Apple News apps have also received some welcoming tweaks to the design. They have become convenient and user friendly. For instance, podcasts under “Shows” are now more prominently listed. They have episode descriptions and an easier access “Resume” button. The Search tab also allows you to browse through different categories to find what you’re looking for.
9. Emoji search
You can now search for a specific emoji in iPadOS 14.5, a feature that was added to the iPhone with the launch of iOS 14.
10. News app
There is a new Search tab in the Apple News app, and the News+ section has been upgraded with a “For You” feature as well as an easier to access Browse tab.
