Nvidia Recalls ‘Vast Majority’ of Shield Tablets it Sold,’ CEO Informs

On Friday, Nvidia announced that the 8-inch Shield tablets it sold during the period from July 2014 to July 2015 have a battery issue. They are susceptible to overheating which possesses a fire hazard. Thus, they have been recalled. However, the fact that no other Shield products i.e. Shield gaming portable and Shield Android TV set-top box is a part of the recall is a relief for the users.

The batteries codenamded B01 did not have any issue. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 83,000 Shield tablets sold in the USA and 5,000 in Canada have been recalled.

The Nvidia CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang told, “Ultimately it was a hard lesson in learning about battery suppliers and battery supply chain. I guess at some level I’m glad we learned it at the beginning when our expectations for sales were rather modest and just getting into it,” CNET during the second-quarter earnings report of the company.

 Nvidia started manufacturing Shield for gamers however the sale of this device did not happen as expected as believed by experts.

On being asked about the sales and future of this device, he said “How long are we going to be in this? A long time. I believe in Shield. I believe this is a very important investment for us. I have big, big, big dreams. But we started out with modest beginnings because we have to learn to walk before we run.”… Read the rest

Nvidia has launched the Tegra X1 superchip for mobile phones. This mobile processor is expected to work much like a CPU with its 1 teraflop floating point performance. CES 2015 saw the launch of the superchip for cars and mobile phones with a quality much like a quality gaming console

While the Drive PX is meant for development of auto pilot capabilities, the Drive CX is meant to provide stunning car infotainment displays in the time to come. Nvidia Drive PX would enable cars to find open space in a parking garage and return to pick up the driver when required. The driver can be summoned with help of a smartphone call too!

In contrast, the Nvidia Drive CX cockpit computer has advanced graphic solutions that allows the computer to navigate and monitor driving. Surround vision is enabled in the Nvidia Drive CX cockpit mode and it allows for a 360 degree view of the car in real time. This can solve the problem of blind spots to a large extent.
