How to downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10 without losing data

It is quite possible to downgrade from window 11 to Windows 10 without losing data. But it is much easier if you do so within 10 days of installing the beta.

This happens because Windows keeps your previous and old files for only 10 days. Just after 10 days, Windows automatically remove files from the internal drive to free up space. It can also be manually removed with Disk Cleanup.

These are the steps to downgrade Windows within 10 days

  • Go to settings and select update and security
  •  Scroll down to recovery
  • Click on recovery and you’ll see go back to the previous version of Windows 10
  • Click go back to get started

NOTE: you will see this option only if you are doing it within 10 days.

  • From the window that appears, choose any of the options and click ‘Next’
  • If asked to check for updates, click ‘No, thanks’
  • Click next from the following two screens and then ‘Go back to earlier build’ to get the process started

NOTE: Though your files will be unaffected and safe, it’s always better to back up your data.

How to downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10 after 10 days

This is another way on how to downgrade from Windows 11 to Windows 10. The method is for the downgrade after 10 days.

If you decide to downgrade your Windows after 10 days, you will have to reinstall Windows 10. This is far more complicated than it sounds. However, you will have to do a backup first, the process will work with only a clean installation.

Follow these steps:

  • Visit Windows 10 download page on the Microsoft website
  • Under ‘Create Windows 10 installation media’, click ‘Download tool now
  • Once done, click the downloaded file to open it
  • From the ‘Do you want to allow this app to make changes to your device?’ pop-up, select ‘Yes’
  • The Windows 10 Setup window will now appear
  • After a few seconds, click ‘Accept’ to agree to the terms and conditions
  • The ‘Getting a few things ready’ screen will show for a few seconds. From the next screen, select ‘Upgrade this PC now’ and click ‘Next’
  • The latest version of Windows 10 will now be downloaded. You can still use your PC in the meantime
  • Once the download is complete, click ‘Next’ and then ‘Accept’ from the following screen
  • From the ‘Choose what to keep’ screen, make sure you select ‘Nothing’, then ‘Next’ once again
  • You’ll now be on the ‘Ready to install’ page
  • Click ‘Install’ to begin the process

NOTE:  There’s no going back from here

As soon as the process is completed, follow the steps ahead if you are using the device for the first time. You’ll be able to use the latest Windows 10 version within a few minutes.

The other option is to install Windows from a USB. If you want to reinstall Windows 10 on multiple devices, go for this option.

You might change your mind sometimes and want to upgrade to Windows 11 again.

To do so visit to ‘Windows Update’ within the Settings app to initiate the upgrade, or you can visit the Windows 11 section of the Microsoft website instead. 

 From here download a Windows 11 ISO image. Then use media creation tool or Windows 11 installation assistant to create an installation USB drive or DVD.
