Use the Left Click and Esc Key

  • Left-click on the file or folder on the desktop that you want to drag
  • While holding the left mouse button press the Esc key on the keyboard once
  • Now release the left mouse button

Using the Command Prompt

  • Open the Run command window by pressing the Win + X hotkey on the keyboard
  • Write cmd in the Run command search box
  • Press the Ctrl + Shift + Enter shortkey on the keyboard together to launch the Command Prompt in elevated mode
  • In the Command Prompt (admin) window run the sfc /scannow command and press Enter
  • Wait for the process to run as it will take a while to run a scan and fix any issue immediately if detected
  • Once the scanning is complete, restart the computer, then the drag and drop problem should be resolved

Running DISM

  • Right-click on the Start menu and choose Windows PowerShell (Admin)
  • In the Windows PowerShell (admin) window, write the command DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  • Wait for the process to run as it will take a while some time to scan and remove corrupted system files if any on the spot itself
  • Once the process is complete, exit the PowerShell and reboot the computer
  • Try the drag and drop feature which should be working by now

Modify the User Account Control Settings

  • Press Windows + R keys together to open the Run command search box
  • Write useraccountcontrolsettings in the run command window and press the Enter key to open the User Account Control Settings window
  • Set the bar of the recommended settings to Notify me only when applications try to make changes to my computer (default) in the User Account Control Settings window
  • Click on OK to save the changes and exit
  • Click on Yes in the User Account Control prompt to set the changes
  • Go back to check whether the drag and drop feature is working or not

Set the Virtual Memory to Automatic

  • Open the Run command window by right-clicking on the Start menu
  • Open the Systems Properties by writing sysdm.cpl in the Run command search box
  • Go to the Advanced tab and click on Settings under the Performance section
  • Click on the Advanced tab in the Performance window and choose Programs under the Adjust for best performance of section
  • Click on the Change button under the Virtual Memory section
  • Check the box beside Automatically manage paging file size for all drives in the Virtual Memory window
  • Restart the computer to check whether or not the drag and drop feature is working

Disable UAC through Registry Editor

  • Launch the Run command search box by pressing the Win + R keys together
  • Type regedit and press OK to launch the Registry Editor
  • Paste the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System path in the Registry Editor address bar and press Enter
  • Double click on the EnableLUA on the right side of the pane
  • In the Edit DWORD (32-bit) Value box, change the Value data field to 0 from 1
  • Press OK to save changes and exit
  • Exit Registry Editor and restart the computer
  • The drag and drop feature shall be functioning now

Check If the Sensitivity of the Drag and Drop Feature is Set Too High

  • Open the context menu by pressing the Win + X shortcut key
  • Open the Run command search box by selecting Run from the menu
  • Type regedit in the Run command search box
  • Press OK to open the Registry Editor window
  • Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop path in the Registry Editor window
  • Select the DragHeight string value on the right side of the pane
  • Double click on it and in the Edit String window, click on the Value data field and change the value from the default 4 to a little higher
  • Press OK to save the changes and exit
  • Once you are on the Registry Editor again, choose the DragWidth string value which is also set to a default 4, and double click on it
  • Follow the same process as you did for DragHeight and set the same string value as DragHeight
  • Press OK to save the changes and exit
  • Exit Registry Editor and restart the computer
  • The drag and drop feature shall be functioning now

But always remember to take a backup of the registry data before you work on the Registry Editor to recover the data if you lose the same in the process. Change the value to a preferred number but do not set it too high and it may create issues with the drag and drop feature.
