Qualcomm Sign Deal with Honda, Volvo, & Renault to Supply Car Chips

Qualcomm will now supply its chips to Honda Motor Co Ltd, Volvo Group, and Renault SA. The deal was announced by Qualcomm on Tuesday. The San Diego, California, based company has been into talks for its mobile phone chips. However, it has now created a wide range of automotive offerings.

The chips that are created by Qualcomm are all aimed to allow automakers to transform the vehicles they make into rolling computers. These can be updated with paid upgrades. The carmakers are then able to generate revenue even after the vehicle leaves dealer lots, a business model initiated by Tesla Inc.

Qualcomm at a Consumer Electronics Show held in Las Vegas said that it has got a deal with Polestar and Geely Holding-backed brands Volvo to make a use of Qualcomm’s “Snapdragon Cockpit” chips. Also, to use an OS from Alphabet Inc’s Google in vehicles starting this year. Volvo will start the production of its electric SUV this year. The deal will allow to have hands-free use of Google navigation and Assistant with Google Maps.

Volvo Car Group will use Qualcomm’s ‘Snapdragon Digital Cockpit Technologies’ Google’s Android Automotive OS in its forthcoming Polestar 3 SUV and electric SUV.

Honda models will use ‘3rd Generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platforms’. Report affirms, Upcoming Honda vehicles will come with an Android-powered infotainment system. The vehicles in the US might be commercially available in the second half of 2022. By the mid or end of 2023, vehicles might also be available across the globe.

Along with these two, Renault will also use Qualcomm Technologies.

Qualcomm also confirmed that it has come up with a new chip and system for computer vision. The new system uses artificial intelligence and cameras to provide safety to the people.

The software used in the new “Snapdragon Ride Vision System” is from Arriver. The software is among the Qualcomm’s $4.5 billion purchase of Veoneer- a automotive technology firm.
