WhatsApp has recently launched WhatsApp Disappearing Messages features for Indian users. Facebook is all set to be rolled out for to its 2-billion plus users by the end of this month. The company has decided to roll the feature on all WhatsApp-supported devices including Android, iOS, and Linux-based KaiOS devices, as well as WhatsApp Web and Desktop platforms.

The WhatsApp Disappearing Messages Features will be made available for individual as well as group chats. Users can end messages that disappear on WhatsApp by enabling disappearing messages. Once the feature is enabled, new messages sent in the individual or group chat will disappear after seven days. Facebook has said that this setting won’t affect messages you previously sent or received in the chat. In an individual chat, users will have the choice of turning the disappearing messages either on or off. In a group chat, only group admins will have the capacity to turn the disappearing messages on or off.

What will happen to the media in disappearing messages?

The images and videos received in WhatsApp will be automatically downloaded to your photos. In case the disappearing messages feature is turned on, media sent in the chat will disappear, but will be saved on the phone if auto-download is on. The new WhatsApp feature will also clear photos and videos after seven days, and even though the messages will disappear for both the sender as well as the recipient, it will still be possible for users to take screenshots or just simply copy messages before they are automatically deleted.

Furthermore, if a disappearing message is forwarded to a chat with disappearing messages off, the message will not disappear in the forwarded chat. Also, if a user creates a backup before a message disappears, the disappearing message will be copied in the backup, but will be deleted when a user restores from a backup.
