Marking the IMD’s Foundation Day Celebrations, the Ministry of Earth Sciences has launched mobile application ‘Mausam’ for India Meteorological Department (IMD). The Mausam app, designed and created jointly by the International Crops Research Institute for the Semi-Arid Tropics (ICRISAT), the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune and the India Meteorological Department (IMD), focuses on enhance forecast as well as warning services of the government will enable Indian users to track weather updates among other features, to enhance forecast as well as warning services of the government.

Available on both Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store for download, the ministry in an official statement said, “This Mobile App is dedicated to the general public and designed to communicate the weather information and forecasts in a lucid manner without technical jargons.” The MausamApp will serve as an important tool for distribution of weather information and warnings in an attractive yet user friendly manner to meet the requirements of the public.

Features of Mausam App:

Current Weather: The Mausam app will be updated 8 times in a day and will provide accurate data on current temperature, humidity, wind speed and direction for 200 cities. It will also provide users with correct and timely Information on Sunrise and, sunset and moonrise and moonset.

Nowcast: The Nowcastfeature of the Mausam app displays three-hourly warnings of localized weather phenomena. The weather app will also showcase the intensity issued for about 800 stations, and districts of India by State Meteorological Centres of IMD. It will also intimate the users with warnings in case of severe weather conditions.

City Forecast: The Mausam app includes relevant and updated Information on the past 24 hours and 7-day forecast of weather conditions around 450 cities in India

Warnings: The Mausam app will issue alerts in districts falling under colour code (Red, Orange and Yellow) to caution citizens of impending weather conditions. In such case, colour code Red is the most severe category urging authorities to take action, and the Orange code indicates authorities and public to be alert of the changing weather status.

Radar products: The app will also offer latest Station wise radar products updated every 10 minutes
