On Friday, Nvidia announced that the 8-inch Shield tablets it sold during the period from July 2014 to July 2015 have a battery issue. They are susceptible to overheating which possesses a fire hazard. Thus, they have been recalled. However, the fact that no other Shield products i.e. Shield gaming portable and Shield Android TV set-top box is a part of the recall is a relief for the users.
In tablets also, only the ones whose battery is codenamed Y01 has been recalled. The batteries codenamded B01 did not have any issue. According to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission, about 83,000 Shield tablets sold in the USA and 5,000 in Canada have been recalled.
The Nvidia CEO, Jen-Hsun Huang told, “Ultimately it was a hard lesson in learning about battery suppliers and battery supply chain. I guess at some level I’m glad we learned it at the beginning when our expectations for sales were rather modest and just getting into it,” CNET during the second-quarter earnings report of the company.
Nvidia started manufacturing Shield for gamers however the sale of this device did not happen as expected as believed by experts.
On being asked about the sales and future of this device, he said “How long are we going to be in this? A long time. I believe in Shield. I believe this is a very important investment for us.
