Selfies To Replace Passwords For Online Shopping

A pilot program from MasterCard could let you use selfies as passwords for online shopping. According to this latest move, online shoppers will be using self-portraits or selfies to authenticate their identity. The credit card company has decided to go ahead with this new system of authentication because it is a quicker and more secure method.

Why Selfie authentication?

Ajay Bhalla, President of Enterprise Security Solutions at MasterCard says, “We want to Selfies Could Replace Passwords For Online Shoppersidentify people for who they are, not what they remember….. we have too many passwords to remember and this creates extra problems for consumers and businesses.”

MasterCard In Talks

MasterCard had created SecureCode as a means to verify a user’s identity prior to an online transaction. MasterCard has earlier tested and developed apps for facial authentication, cardiac rhythm as well as voice recognition.

However, these were pretty cumbersome as compared to the new selfie rule, which will just require downloading the MasterCard app. The company is trying to cut the deal with a couple of banks as well as smartphone giants like Samsung, Apple, Microsoft, Google and BlackBerry.
