Apple iPhone 5 Vs Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs Samsung Galaxy Note 2: Why Apple Did Not Find Many Takers In 2012?

For the first time since Tim Cook took over as the CEO, Apple’s earnings ended up lower than expected. The world’s most valuable tech company sure had its work cut out for itself during 2012, thanks to Samsung’s winning bestseller devices. But was that really the only reason why Apple failed to post great profits during the first quarter?

The company generated $54.5 billion of revenue and $13.1 billion in earnings during this period, which translates to $13.81 per share. It did end up lower than the expected values of $54.7 billion revenue, even though the earnings per share was higher than the $13.44 expected by Wall Street. However, Apple did manage to do better than its own expectations – the company had forecasted $52 billion revenue and $11.75 per share in October 2012.

Tim Cook remained optimistic about the results, and went on to note how this was a record revenue earned by Apple in a quarter. Apple managed to sell 47.8 million iPhones, 22.9 million iPads, 12.7 million iPods and 4.1 million Macs during the quarter. However, the company’s forecast for the next quarter is lesser – expected revenue is between $41 and $43 billion, while Wall Street has forecasted revenues of $45.6 billion for the same period.

So what exactly happened to Apple during the period? Was it just because its archrival’s products ended up stealing the show? While it is true that Samsung managed to sell a huge number of Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Note 2 smartphones, we doubt if that’s the only reason why the iPhone 5 didn’t find as many takers.

What further pushed consumers away from the iPhone 5 was essentially boredom – there wasn’t much that had changed since the iPhone 4S.  Even though the iPhone 5 is slimmer, lighter and more powerful than its predecessor, the overall user experience hasn’t undergone a drastic makeover. Another huge disadvantage was that the iPhone 5 still had a 4-inch screen, in the age of the 4.8-inch Galaxy S3 and 5.5-inch Galaxy Note 2.

Will Apple make more amends to the next iPhone due to come out sometime by mid-2013 to win back some of its consumers? Can we expect to see a different form factor for the iPhone as well as a new UI for the iOS?… Read the rest

Nokia Lumia 920 Goes Up Against iPhone 5 Commercial, Asks People To Switch From iOS

Now, we know that Nokia’s got its work cut out for itself, going up against the Apple iPhone 5 and a slew of Android phones. But we never thought its colorful flagship phone – the Lumia 920, would start an ad campaign that makes the iPhone black and white ad look so bland.

In an ad released by Nokia Germany, Nokia plays up one of the most alluring features of the Lumia 920 – its range of brightly colored covers, and compares it with the iPhone 5’s drab color choices of black and white. This animated video goes on to describe quite vividly with barely any words how a man gets in line at what resembles an Apple Store to ask for a differently colored phone, freaking out others around him. And when he steps out, he sees people around him flaunting their Nokia Lumia 920’s in a variety of colors.

Of course, in terms of subtlety and class, we have to give Nokia more points over Samsung’s more in-your-face mockery. And in this age of mono-colored smartphones, this ad does go on to highlight a key strength the Lumia 920 has over the other bestsellers – with its happy, quirky color options. But is that going to be enough to make the Lumia 920 a success? Guess we’ll find out soon.… Read the rest

Samsung Galaxy Nexus In Dire Straits, Apple Again Asks For Ban

Even after U.S. Court gave a decision not to put ban on products Samsung Electronics Co, Apple argued that the Court should re-think its decision to knock over the pretrial sales ban on Samsung breach.

A lower court in California ordered a ban on sales of Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus smart phone but the .S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit annulled the ban.

Apple argued that this was inappropriate and asked for an “en banc review,” which means more judged would come forward to look at the decision.

The patent over which the companies are fighting is the one which allows the smartphone to search multiple data storage locations at once. For example, the smartphone could search the device’s memory as well as the Internet with a single query.

Apple argued that the sales ban should be reinstated because it uses the patent in question and competes with Samsung.

The three-judge panel had said that consumers are not getting attracted towards Samsung phone because of patent and thus sales ban was unsuitable.… Read the rest

As Apple iPhone Enters China Will it Save the Company’s Growth

iPhone 5 today hits the Chinese market, which is being seen as the savior for sliding Apple shares. Though Apple is one of biggest smartphone manufacturers but if it’s looking for a long term telecom carrier then its penetration in the Chinese market is necessary.

It has been four years since the Cupertino, California-based Apple has been talking to China’s biggest mobile carrier for distribution. China is one of the world’s fastest growing markets and has quite a potential in the telecom sector. Cracking a deal with China Mobile is absolute otherwise Apple is going to miss a lot of phone users to other brands.

“In absolute terms, this (iPhone 5) launch will certainly result in strong sales for Apple in China. However, in relative terms, I don’t believe it will move the needle enough in market share,” said Shiv Putcha, a Mumbai-based analyst at Ovum, a global technology consultant.

In contrast to long queues at Apple stores in USA when iPhone 5 was launched, Apple store in Shanghai just had one person waiting.

It was reported earlier that China Mobile and Apple were not going along due to some technical issues which later evolved into a revenue-sharing issue.

“China Mobile and Apple still have to solve many issues, such as the business model, articles of cooperation and revenue division, but I believe we will reach an agreement eventually,” China Mobile CEO Li Yue was reported by Chinese media as saying in Guangzhou last week. Apple China declined to comment.

Apple’s Brand New Gadget iPhone 5 Still Elusive for the Indian Consumer

Americans got their hands on iPhone5 as soon the phone was launched. The iPhone enticed the buyers at such a fast rate that in just three days Apple delivered five million iPhone 5s to eager buyers.

Apple rolled out iPhone5 around the world in  record time. Around 50 countries, including India, saw the launch of iPhone 5 with a big bang. But even after the launch, most of their countries have not got their hands on the device.

According to Indian retailers, the device reaches them in such low numbers that they sell out almost as fast as they arrive. “Many interested consumers keep calling or coming by to ask for it. Some also put down a deposit, so when stocks come, units are automatically kept aside for them” said an authorised retailer for Apple in a posh South Delhi mall, requesting anonymity.

“We have stopped taking a booking amount from customers since we are not sure when stocks will arrive,” said one of the salesperson.

As per ET at Future World in Connaught Place, an Apple premium reseller, Dipankar, confirmed the shortage of the iPhone 5. “We don’t have any units right now and have no idea when it’ll be available. I can confirm that even our store in Kanpur does not have iPhone 5 in stock. Your best bet is to check back every week.”

People who are eager to buy the phone can go to eBay India and get their hands on the phone. Here, a 16GB iPhone 5 sells for anywhere between Rs 48,000 to Rs 50,000, which is a Rs 2500 to Rs 4500 over the maximum retail price.… Read the rest
