Facebook Might Buy Whatsapp to Boost Mobile Presence

According to online technology portal after buying Instagram, Facebook now has its eyes on Whatsapp.

Whatsapp is an instant messaging service which allows users to message over internet. It was founded in 2009 and since then has become the hot favorite in the messaging circle.

Techcrunch has reported that Facebook is in talks with Whatsapp. The report states the multiplatform mobile messaging app that has been one of the runaway success stories for ad-free, paid services, has been in talks to be acquired by Facebook, according to sources close to the matter.

Whatsapp has touched new heights in the world of messaging apps. As per the figures announced in October 2011, the messaging service had over 1 billion messages being sent on a single day.

According to the Whatsapp blogpost 1 billion messages in a day means 41,666,667 messages an hour, 694,444 messages a minute, and 11,574 messages a second.

Both Facebook and Whatsapp have not said anything about the story but if Facebook at all buys the messaging service it will give a major boost to Facebook mobile app.

Facebook’s Q3 results for 2012 showed that mobile ads had worked for the site. Nearly 14 percent of the revenue for the site came from mobile ads. “I want to dispel this myth that Facebook can’t make money on mobile,” said CEO Mark Zuckerberg in a conference call with analysts. “This may (have seemed) true earlier this year because we hadn’t started trying yet.”
