Renowned Kuchipudi dancer Shobha Naidu passed away today morning, 14 October, in Hyderabad. Padma Shri Awardee Shobha Naidu took her last breath in a private hospital where she was undergoing treatment for the past few days. Admired by even those who weren’t familiar with Kuchipudi dance, Naidu was born in 1956 in Anakapalli, Visakhapatnam. She was a disciple of the legendary guru Vempati China Satyam and had choreographed eighty solo numbers, fifteen ballets, and had even trained over 1,500 students from the India and abroad. In 1991, she received the Sangeet Natak Akademi award and she was also awarded with the title of ‘Nritya Choodamani’ by the Sri Krishna Gana Sabha of Madras. She was the Principal for Kuchipudi Art Academy, Hyderabad and trained hundreds of students from India and abroad.
Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao mourned the death of Shobha Naidu praised her for her outstanding contribution. She had received several accolades for her beautiful portrayal of Satyabhama and Padmavath. The eminent dancer had mastered the technique of Kuchipudi and started dancing lead roles in dance dramas when she was very young.
