Samsung Galaxy S3 vs. Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini: Small on Size, Light on the Pocket

Samsung had hinted recently about it, and finally it’s here – the Galaxy S3 Mini. According to the company, it’s an alternative for folks looking for a compact smartphone for practical purposes. For some who found the Galaxy S3 far too big to carry around like a regular phone, Samsung decided to create something similar, albeit in a tinier package. So, is it just the screen size that got smaller in the Mini version of the Galaxy S3?

It’s a great strategic move on Samsung’s part to come up with a smaller sized Galaxy S3. The 4 inch touchscreen offers direct competition to the iPhone and is aimed at pulling people away from Apple’s offering. It looks quite similar to the Galaxy S3, but in a smaller package, and even runs on Android Jelly Bean with Samsung’s own TouchWiz user interface.

The S3 mini is powered by a mere 1GHz dual-core processor, a huge step down from its big brother. Even the RAM has been cut in half, but that’s understandable. Its battery is just 1500 mAh and the S3 Mini’s camera has a resolution of 5MP. But the biggest disappointment in the S3 Mini has got to be the 4 inch screen, and not because of its dimensions. A resolution of just 800X400 makes the Mini’s screen have a 233 ppi pixel density, as opposed to the Galaxy S3’s gorgeous 306 ppi screen.

With specs like these, we wonder if there’s anything especially charming enough about the S3 Mini or if it’s just another competitor in the over-crowded mid-priced Android smartphone range, which already has phones like the Galaxy Nexus, HTC One V and the Galaxy Ace 2. Apart from the S3 tag, we doubt if consumers would find anything fancy enough to buy the trimmed down version on offer.
