You probably might have already heard of the Oculus Rift tale by now. The sample hardware which has been made available to different developers in still in nascent stages but it is already gearing for a commercial release. Till the commercial release happens, the Oculus Rift team has their hands full with a lot of prodding and tweaking which is still left to be completed.
One of the team members at Oculus Rift creator stated that the team was busy developing higher resolution, position-based tracking which will enable them at tracking the entire movement via space, which will reduce latency and motion blur. These are some of the most harrowing issues that tend to disappoint players and rob them off the actual experience.
Research in motion
For Oculus, one of the most challenging hurdles has been to overcome the motion sickness issue. One of the team members has assured that the Oculus team has registered considerable progress in solving the motion sickness issue. The team member also mentioned that they have already developed internal prototypes for some specific content that eliminates motion sickness completely. The developer also added that their new hardware is far more advanced and reduces the possibility of someone suffering motion sickness to a great extent.
Though the Oculus team has made considerable progress while trying to fix motion sickness, it should not be coming as a surprise for players to experience slight uneasiness during replicated motion at high speed. The run speed clocked in the Unreal Tournament 3 comes close to 30 miles per hour while the instant acceleration backward reaches 40 miles per hour, which the human body might face some awkwardness in handling.
The team member added that there is lot of work to be done for making games function in VR so as to make games that don’t make players sick and at the same time, well considering the VR’s limitations.
