For avid users of California-based Evernote, the recent hack attack came as rude shock. The online note-taking service announced that a hacker had gained access to sensitive customer information and therefore, 50 million users’ passwords were being reset. The company said that an unknown number of encrypted passwords belonging to Evernote customers were accessed by the hacker. Therefore, user accounts were being reset “in an abundance of caution”.
However, the company has also said that no important information of customers such as payment details were stolen. The hackers were also not able to access user notes that were stored on Evernote. Evernote has also said that the passwords were encrypted with hashes and salting. Therefore, login details were not available to the hackers.
However, they now have access to usernames and email addresses with the possibility of being abused. In case you have not done that yet, it would be a good idea to place a strong password. Be wary of emails you receive from the company, especially that deal with changing your password. Be informed about advisories from Evernote.
