Google Meet is set to allow users to change their background on the video conferencing platform. It will enable users to replace it with customized images/virtual backgrounds instead. Default background options offered by the firm include landscapes, office spaces and abstract backgrounds. But, users can also upload their own select images to personalize background.
Google announced the background change update in its recent workspace blog. It said, “You can now replace your background with an image in Google Meet. You can either use Google’s hand-picked images, which include office spaces, landscapes, and abstract backgrounds, or upload your own image.”
The new feature has been added as educational institutions and various organizations continue to operate remotely and are using platforms like Google Meet, etc. to interact and hold meetings. But, it is worth noting that Zoom, one of its major video-conferencing rival, had already launched the customize background feature months ago.
Despite intense competition and various new platforms emerging in the pandemic, Google Meet has successfully attracted a decent share of customers to its video conferencing platform. Additionally, its Gmail integration allows all Gmail users to easily access the app.
Talking of privacy and security controls for the new background feature, Google Blog has added that there will be no admin control for the feature at the time of launch. However, it will be rolling out admin controls to select which organizational units can use custom and preset backgrounds for meetings in the coming weeks.
Educational institutions in particular will also have admin control over students on whether they can change their profile picture or not and also on background customization. Moreover, besides adding particular images in the backdrop, it also allows you blur your background if you do not wish to choose any.
