Apple has been removing the Facebook gaming app from iOS App store time and again. One of the reasons being cited is that Apple considers the Facebook gaming app on iOS or iPhone as a threat to Apple Arcade. Apple Arcade is a live gaming service that is likely to suffer if the Facebook gaming app is on iOS.
Facebook has been trying to get their app on Apple store since February. This is an apt time for Facebook because of the ongoing situation that has seen more people at home. “Games are by far the most lucrative category of mobile apps worldwide,” the report said. Facebook Gaming app is also receiving competition from Twitch, YouTube as well as the Microsoft Mixer.
According to a report by streaming software firm StreamElements, Facebook Gaming app has seen a 210% increase in hours watched in the year that ended December 2019. However, it still lags behind Twitch and Youtube gaming. Another report from ResearchandMarkets.com suggests that the global gaming industry will see a CAGR of 12% from 2020 to 2025. Users are likely to spend USD 4.5 billion on immersive gaming in 2020.
Talking about the conflict, European Commission executive vice president in charge of competition policy Margrethe Vestager has said, “We need to ensure that Apple’s rules do not distort competition in markets where Apple is competing with other app developers.”
