Delectable Comedy – Masaba Masaba Netflix Series Review

An ardent lover of Neena Gupta, I couldn’t control my excitement when she took her Instagram page to announce her role in the new web series MasabaMasaba with her own daughter Masaba. Eagerly waiting for Saturday, I took my favourite pack of Sweet Chilli Doritos and sat tight on my comfy couch to indulge in some guilt free fun. Set in two contrasting environments, the story is based on snippets from Masaba Gupta’s life, the diverse worlds she straddles across and her foray back into the dating world.

The crisp script based on the relationship between mother and daughter is heart-warming yet so realistic. Mind you, if you are a hard core feminist and love to character assassinate, then this show isn’t for you! It is a fun and frothy series.

With little hints of emotions, the six episode series is slyly marked by light humour and mild bewilderment over the struggles of a rich fashion designer and demands right amount of eye-rolling and hand-wringing.

Every episode takes us through Masaba’s journey – how she negotiates her way through the sticky mess created by nobody but herself. From divorce and its fallout to Masaba returning to her mother, the episodes are more than acting! And then we have the National Award Winning actor, Neena Gupta, at the age of 60, struggling to find good work. The mother daughter duo is all love and keeps you glued with warmth the storyline exudes.

An InterestingRendition of Celebrity Life

The first episode of MasabaMasabaopens with Masaba’s marriage to musician Vinay (Satyadeep Mishra) coming to an end, and then her life turning in to this “hot mess”- a fact that will inspire a future collection on the show. As Masaba Gupta fails in love, friendship and business, she goes back to her mother, with who she shares a bittersweet relation, for sound advice. “Messiness is good or else life will be dry”, Neena Gupta observes. This lovely web series is no show off and instead brings out who these women really are, including not just their strengths and achievements, but also their flaws, messes, and insecurities. It subtly throws light on how fashion industry works and demands the creative tap to flow, all day long. The pace of the show never drops and is entertaining enough to keep you wanting for more. Masaba takes Instagram to distill her learnings via posts, giving social networking app another character. We also have Neil Bhoopalam who stands out and does make the episodes more worthy with his acting skills.
