Capture your Life in 3D: All About the Snapchat Spectacles Upgrade

Snapchat has announced that it will release an upgraded version of its augmented reality sunglasses, Spectacles 3 in November 2019. The third generation of wearable sunglass cameras has sleek new design and a new 3D effect for use in Snapchat. The new Snapchat spectacles upgrade will have an additional HD camera to create depth perception. The new glasses are priced at $380 and are already available for pre-orders on Spectacles.com.

A video released on social media features the new effects that users can add to their “Snaps” with these Spectacles. Snapchat already includes AR filters such as virtual flower crowns and dog ears which have been quite popular with the users. But, these spectacles will further aim to capture depth and 3D dimensions in the same way as a human eye does with its dual HD cameras.

The glasses will come with rounded lenses, a lightweight steel frame, and tinted lenses. It will be available in two color variants – a mineral rose-gold shade and carbon-black. It will allow you to capture 70 videos and more than 200 photos on a charge, and the 4GB of storage on the device can hold up to 100 videos or 1,200 photos.

Depth perception is undoubtedly the most remarkable upgrade in the new model. The app has also built a range of new 3D effects to take advantage of the device’s new depth perception ability. The depth perception features are currently exclusive to Spectacles but are likely to be open-sourced to third-party developers for more effects later.

To capture a 60-second video with Spectacles, you’ll need to tap the button, or you can press and hold to take a still photo (an LED indicator will show both you and others when this is happening). The specs will also collect audio from four different microphones embedded within the frames. Snaps captured with the glasses will automatically appear in the Memories section of the Snapchat app, and can also be exported to your camera roll for use elsewhere.

Highly-priced Spectacles 3 is likely to have a limited appeal among their core user base, the high school students and college-goers, the company seems to have learned from its past mistakes Snapchat Executives have said that the latest version of its video-recording sunglasses will be a limited release and will be aimed at a small group of fashion-forward people. Moreover, they have asserted that Spectacles 3 was a necessary investment for the company in the field of Augmented Reality before it could come up with new and cheaper products.

Snapchat had first launched these spectacles in 2016 and were an absolute hit among social media users. However, the hypes soon fizzled out, leaving company approximately $40 million for its excess inventory. Despite the initial flop of spectacles, tech companies are actively investing in the development of smart glasses. Apple is also rumored to be developing its own Augmented Reality glasses. Internet companies like Facebook and Amazon are also working towards diversifying their revenue streams with hardware products such as the video-chatting Portal device developed by Facebook.

Given the trend, it makes perfect sense for the new Snapchat spectacles upgrade.
