Xiaomi Conquers Smartphone Market; Knocks Over Samsung & Lenovo in China

According to a data study by market research firm Canalys, the Beijing-based mobile manufacturer Xiaomi has outshione Samsung Electronics in the second-quarter (Q2), beating the latter in the competitive line of smartphones. Things are looking up for the three-year old Xiaomi, touted as China‘s top mobile maker in the Q2. The offbeat success in China has made Xiaomi the fifth largest smartphone producer in the world. In the Q2 ended June, Xiaomi produced 15 million smartphones in China, beating Samsung, which sold around 13.2 million units. The Chinese maker also surpassed local brands such as Lenovo and Huawei. Lenovo fell behind Samsung selling around 200,000 smartphones in the second-quarter. Samsung Earnings Suggest It’s Time To Gear Up

Korean handset maker Samsung revealed April-June as its worst quarter in the last two years. This is the first quarter in the last two years that the company has posted such a p in earnings. Operating profit fell 24.6 per cent annually to 7.2 trillion won ($7.03 billion), suggesting uncertain earnings predictions, especially in terms of its handset business. Samsung has been relying on its handset business for profits over the last two years. However, the numbers released for the April-June quarter are worrisome to its future growth. This is a 25% drop in profit for the second quarter due to a slowdown in the smartphone market.  Its operating profit has now fallen for three straight quarters, which highlights the pitfalls of its reliance on smartphone sales. Apple Reports 12% Growth in Profit; Stronger iPhone Sales

In its third quarter report, Apple has posted 12% growth in profit along with strong sales of the iPhone 5. However, iPad sales slunk for the company. The company said that they sold 35.2 million iPhones in the quarter ended June 28, up 12.7% from the same period last year. However, it is a little lower than analyst expectations. While most of their sales were in the United Sales, BRIC markets–Brazil, Russia, India and China–also showed higher sales for the iPhone. Higher iPhone sales led to greater Q3 profit at $7.75 billion, up from $6.9 billion in the same period last year. Revenue rose 6% to $37.4 billion. This is the second quarter of double-digit percentage growth in iPhone sales for Apple.
