The Cupertino-based gadget manufacturer has been working on Apple Car for years under a project code named “Titan”. After the many hiccups, news is that Apple’s electric car is back on track. However, a project that started out in 2014, is expected to launch in 2024. Focused on building an autonomous driving car, the company is working on developing a self-driving Apple-branded car aimed at consumers.

Earlier, the Apple Car was put on a back burner due to internal strife and leadership issues. However, it seems things have come together and the company is diligently working on launching the Apple Car in 2024. The tech giant is also expected to join hands with a manufacturing partner to produce Apple Cars and is currently working on developing next level battery technology to extend range and efficiency.

Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes the car will be Apple’s “next star product”. Aiming for a “revolutionary design” that could potentially be used in a future autonomous vehicle, the company has already held discussions with four suppliers of LiDAR sensors. The LiDar sensors are relatively smaller, more affordable, and more easily mass produced than current LiDAR systems.

Apple has designated teams working on Next-Gen autonomous car. The Apple team in Canada is said to be currently working on developing the base operating system, while another team is dedicated towards designing the software that will run on it, such as a heads-up display and self-driving capabilities.

In 2017, Apple CEO Tim Cook had spoken about Apple’s work on autonomous driving software, confirming the company’s work on self-driven car in a rare candid moment. He said that although the company has always been secretive about the latest technology, however, its often difficult to keep mum because of government regulations revolving around the car software. He said, “We’re focusing on autonomous systems. It’s a core technology that we view as very important. We sort of see it as the mother of all AI projects. It’s probably one of the most difficult AI projects actually to work on.”

Although Apple Car launch is expected in 2024, according to sources familiar with Apple’s plan, the launch of Apple Car could be delayed to 2025 or beyond because of complications posed by the COVID-19 pandemic.
