GTA 5, XCOM, Mass Effect 3 & Dishonored: The Race For Top 10 Games Of 2012

mass effect extended cut

The year is drawing to a close and it is time to pick the top list of games which have rattled us in the past one year. Has action or sci-fi dominated yet again, one finds out…

In a week’s time we would be entering the New Year and having survived the apocalypse, it sure is time for some celebrations. And if you want to take the New Year weekend with some gaming action, there is a short list of favorite picks which can make the ride more enjoyable. Now to begin the charts, I will pick one of the much discussed games of 2012 :

10. Spelunky

The game is a bit addictive and takes you back in time. It is a master stroke in terms of its effortless game play across the board. Developed by Derek Yu, it is one of the true arcade ventures of this year with its random levels and underground tunnels just to keep you engaged for a while.

9. Far Cry 3

For those who love some insanity driven into their stories, Ubisoft’s Far Cry 3 offers an unpredictable situation and figuring your way out of a mess of sorts. Its multiplayer may be weak link but its superior graphics and gripping play make up for the rest.

8. The Walking Dead

The initiative of Telltale Games does provide one with a cool set of interesting scenarios involving the zombies and though I would have wished to see a Resident Evil in the lineup, the new games are offering a much more interactive and interesting content for the gamers. The graphics are really impressive and a good test of your survival abilities overall.

7. Sleeping Dogs

In the absence of a genuine GTA on the charts, Sleeping Dogs can make it up the list for now. The unique setting ofHong Kongand all the elements that result in a well-defined potpourri of adventurous game play.

6. Borderlands 2

It would be a good pick just for the sheer weapons range offered through the course and of course, the point of garnering loot across the board. The options are limitless and the characters straight out of a graphical comic book.

5. Journey

It is ironical that halfway through the list, the Sony-backed Journey forms the leader of the light – pun intended. The tremendous ride by the solitary figure in the game is nothing short of a revelation for many gamers. A way for the unusual and abstract.

4. Gravity Rush

Another comic book venture which can keep the pulses running and with a female protagonist it does prove to be the next level. The lead character Kat can control gravity and it has one of the best game play of the lot.

3. Dishonored

One of the best FPS games of this year, the Arkane Studios game has all the intrigues to keep the user plugged in for longer durations. As a one-man army with a dedicated mission, you are out to annihilate your opponents, thinking on your feet, all the time.

2. Mass Effect 3

BioWare has gathered many reviews with its final installment of the Mass Effect series. And just like its predecessors, the game has been topping charts with its unique narrative and engaging game play. Even though, the finale to the game was much debated, its quality remains unmatched across the board.

1. XCOM: Enemy Unknown

Now, coming down to the last two slots, I was perplexed to choose between them. But the toppers can only merit on delivering an all round performance and with its polished strategy deliverables, XCOM is ahead of its league. It is a complex game and well crafted for the modern gamer.

And if one was to complete the list, there would be some more favorites on the ride including Darkness II, Dragon’s Dogma, Guild Wars 2, Halo 4, Activision’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 2, Assassin’s Creed 3, among others. For now, one still awaits the arrival of the New Year but do remain connected for the fresh arrivals of the year.… Read the rest

Call of Duty: Black Ops 2 ups the ante this season; FPS gaming on a new level!

Activision’s latest outing on the Call of Duty series promises to be a toughie to beat with its innovative settings and enhanced game play. It has also tried to reduce its errors from last time to offer a more qualitative product…

Treyarch and Activision’s FPS venture, ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops II’ is still pitching forward with a distinct edge over its close rival, 343 Industries’ Halo 4. With the figures ending October 20 mentioning it to be the highest grosser, the game has really improved in leaps and bounds. Unlike the Microsoft team which has relied heavily on its marketing team to push it forward, the Call of Duty series has relied on its sheer ingenuity.

They have always worked with set formulae but backed it with a superior engine which plays out at 60 frames per second as compared to 30 frames in other contemporary games. And as game director David Vonderhaar confirms that they have improved upon this as well and enhanced it with superior graphics and lighting effects as well. Of course, the multiplayer details and game play trailer would validate this as well. They have gone ahead and even picked up the future scenario with its set of modern weaponry which will give it the necessary twist.

The game has also enhanced its multiplayer abilities with newer possibilities of coops being possible across various diverse regions as well. This feature is an addition to the Black Ops 2 and if you have a good internet connection then you can play across the board from anyone in any country. Previous versions only allowed gamers from a particular region to be playing alongside with no connection whatsoever to other gamers.

And if you are still not convinced, then trust Treyarch to throw some freebies to spice up the bargain. Pre-order users get their hands on a premium Elite subscription besides the NukeTown 2025 Bonus Map. Treyarch even titillated audiences with a preview trailer of NukeTown as well. Gamers would also get to have access to the Double XP Launch Weekend as well. Coming to the DLC, Black Ops II Season Pass (on Steam) is also available at a price of 49.99$ which provides you with 4 Epic DLC Map Packs including the famous Zombies playable content and multiplayer combat options as well. The Maps may separately cost you 14.99$ a piece which would be at least 10$ more than the saver pack. They will be released across the year 2013.

Also, in case you want a grip extender, then do try the new range from KontrolFreek which has released the FPS Havoc which can improve your game play and also offer the cool look to your controls as well. It comes at a price of 13.99$ but is useful for a wide variety of games as well. The latest edition of Call of Duty is priced at 59.99$ for the pre-order version with a release date of November 13, 2012. Activision has come out with its final launch trailer and now the battle remains only between Black Ops II and Halo 4 on being the most successful game of Fall 2012.… Read the rest

The preview launch of the first Spartan Ops episode of Halo 4 has really paced the nerves of gamers who are now looking forward to the new edition. Halo Waypoint has released a suitable Interactive guide for the game as well…

The keyword is buzz. And with the hopes pinned with Halo 4, the stakes are even higher. But 343 Industries has managed to always deliver each promise with a bang. In a series of new reveals, they have come out with the launch trailer of the first Spartan Ops episode which features a wide variety of platforms spread across 10 episodes and 5 missions related to each episode. That is a mind boggling 50 missions to be completed in this edition. For now, it is unclear whether Microsoft will foot the bill for all the episodes or charge the gamers in return for the new content addition. The Spartan Ops which provide the cooperative modes for the game play, would be debuting in this edition and would be played out as a series of weekly episodes keeping the buzz alive on this version.

For starters, the first Spartan Op is free to download content which would be related to the game but would be happening at a span of six months from the game’s setting. The cooperative mode will take up to four players. It will be featuring new storylines, content, events and locations and lead to the reveals related to new missions. Gamers can participate in this edition or keep on reviewing it as viewers.

Meanwhile, Halo Waypoint has launched its own unique Interactive guide which can be checked at which provides a wide variety of information about the latest edition offering the kind of weapons, armors and vehicles along with war modes and much more on offer. And yes, the Halo 4 tutorial would be the apt inspiration for you before entering the realm of the game which will begin on November 6, 2012. The easy browsing guide offers you a number of options to click and review, offering in-depth detail about the game and its outcome.

One is eagerly counting down to the date but considering the superb details which have been pouring in, it would be a wise step to pre-order the edition. Now the game’s biggest competition is Activision-backed Call of Duty: Black Ops II which has ruled the charts till October 20, 2012. But considering the new bountiful content dropped across the board by 343 Industries, this would be a close race between the two games. Registering a sale of over 1,20,000 copies, the game has been a leader in its pre-order records. The Spartan Ops would be the key feature which will decide the success of the game! FPS shooting would be reaching a new level with this new input but whether the other games would be able to upgrade themselves to this new level is a big question for all! For now, the best thing would be to just sit back and enjoy the show!

Halo 4 to have a celebrity connect; David Fincher and Conan O’Brien to deck up the launch!

Celebrities associating with their favorite game is not new. But when a game such as Halo 4 decides to unveil its details, the stakes just get bigger…

Paving its way, there are a number of celebrities who are endorsing this new game and the latest in line is ‘The Social Network’ director David Fincher who has especially flown toPragueto set up a two-minute trailer for this new game.

An avid Halo fan, Fincher’s addition to the team is now surprising considering the fact that Microsoft (which is backing 343 Industries) is renowned for its magnanimous preparations related to each of its products. In the very obvious absence of Rockstar’s GTA 5 which was initially scheduled for a Fall 2012 launch, Halo 4 becomes the most anticipated and biggest release of the year 2012. But having said that, one has no intention of taking it away from the team who has also roped in Conan O’Brien and Andy Richter to voice a couple of characters in the game. They have also connected themselves with the ongoing Presidential elections offering the ‘warrior armor’ for players who would be watching three of the four debates on their Xbox consoles. Now, adding Barack Obama and Mitt Romney to your marketing line-up can’t fail that badly! The company has employed its marketing skills innovatively to promote its new venture.

The Fincher-directed trailer would be launched on October 18 on ‘Late Night with Jimmy Fallon’ and would also feature the special effects input by visual effects expert, Time Miller, renowned for his work on ‘Scott Pilgrim vs The World’. The trailer is bound to get the pulses racing with details about the new threat which is going to haunt the Master Chief. The combination of Miller and Fincher is bound to bring in a boost to the Halo 4 franchise which is following a storyline on Requiem with John-117 and Cortana leading the pack. The trailer would be available on Halo Waypoint and the Xbox YouTube channel as well. With the number of celebrities climbing on the Halo bandwagon, the game is romping in like a juggernaut.

An online web action series has already begun and has been garnering its own share of brickbats and bouquets. A number of actors such as Tom Green, Anna Popplewell, Daniel Cudmore have also been involved with it as well. The game which has spurned a number of launches including novels, miniseries and artifacts along with Halo-branded consumables, is now becoming a legacy for the modern gamers. It is gaining popularity as a collectible and with a range of celebrities endorsing this multi-million franchise, the ‘Halo’ is going to shine for some times to come.

Halo 4 to Have ‘Flood’ as the Infection Mode; New Multiplayer Revealed!

With the release date approaching for Halo 4, new details are revealed regarding the return of the Infection mode in this new epic venture…

Everybody is waiting with anxiety regarding the return of the Master Chief and his aide, Cortana as they would trudge through the alienlandofRequiemin the new version of Halo. Now, 343 Industries has not lagged far behind in revealing new details from time to time regarding the game and keeping the fire burning in the mind and hearts of all its fans. The latest reveal from the Microsoft informs the return of the multiplayer mode Infection, which was part of the earlier games.

Titled ‘Flood’ in the latest version, the reveals show infected Spartans progressing to attack the players. The mode supports up to 12 players, which is a considerable number with two players donning the roles of Alpha Zombies (infected ones) and the remaining trying to survive them. Weapons are disabled in this mode and players have to survive on the basis of physical game play with claws and enhanced vision to support their attempts.

The new title does seem apt for this new adventure as Halo Destiny reveals that ‘infected players will play as a flood combat form’ in the course of the game. The exact speed and performance of the players is yet to be revealed by the gaming company. Meanwhile, the game will also have the services of a ‘new vehicle’ called the ‘Mantis’ for John-117 who can utilize it for combating the Prometheans and Covenant forces.

For now, we can estimate it to be another boosting shot for the game, which is coming up with a lot of firsts and coupling it with some of the most favorite modes from the past games. 343 Industries has really revived the game in a larger-than-life format and is not leaving any stone unturned to make it an epic venture. Unlike the ever popular Rockstar-backed GTA series, Halo has recently seen a change of ownership with Bungie making way for Microsoft-backed 343 Industries but that has not led to any disappointments so far. On the other hand, Rockstar has failed to sustain the interests related to GTA 5 revealing very little related to the game and even getting a disappointing review from the investors who are now predicting that the game would be delayed further. Though heartbreaking, we still expect Rockstar to pick up some clues from the Halo 4 makers.

And just in case, you are curious about the live action series, it would soon be making its presence felt on October 5, 2012. The series revealed its new trailer titled ‘Lecture’, which details the academy and its proceedings. Although, the online series is yet to pick up pace, the game still has gathered quite a good set of reviews before its launch. The wait till November 6, 2012, would be an arduous one for many fans of this series. But it would be worth it with the online series prepping the gamers before the final showdown.… Read the rest

Halo 4 Multiplayer Will Have Grifball!

343 Industries reveal more about the latest Halo 4, which is going to reprise the famous Grifball for its multiplayer format. Discover what the game is all about and what kind of weapons are available this time around…

In a big plus to Halo gamers, it has been announced that 343 Industries would be bringing back the Grifball. The game mode, which was seen in Halo 3 and Halo: Reach is going to reprise in the new edition as well. The players would be combating with a Aptly termed as Death Rugby, it has rules similar to the sport with some cool weaponry attached to the game play. The players would have to work as a team of 3 to 4 people and would have to encounter an opposing team for a round bomb, which is placed at the center of the arena. The battle would include conflicts with rival players who would try to thwart the ball carrier and to facilitate the attack, each of the players are provided with a Gravity Hammer and an Energy Sword. To make matters more enticing, the player health would be at 10 percent with the weapon damage adjusted at 200 percent.

Both weapons are crucial in their usage as the Gravity Hammer, which is a formidable instrument can just swat the opponent but also allow the bomb to fly off in a random manner. On the other hand, Energy Sword lets you possess the bomb once the kill is achieved. Meanwhile, each team has to defend its bomb carrier just like in Rugby and killing the carrier does not mean the end of the game. The players have the ability to respawn within three seconds at their own goal post and begin their campaign again. Those who enjoy their multiplayer can also enjoy the play as the opponent is eliminated with a single hit. Although, the advantage lies with the player who carries the bomb as he can enjoy the benefits of faster recharge and also have a 2x Overshield with enhanced 150 per cent speed and damage resistance after possessing the bomb for a certain period of time, turning it orance like Grif.

Players are also eliminated when they are thrown outside the arena and again respawn at the goal post. The crux of the game is tactical strategies combined with effective teamwork, which can lead them to an easy victory. The new edition of Grifball will have 9 rounds of 3 minute time.

With the reintroduction of Grifball, 343 Industries is once again touching base with loyal fans of Halo. The game, which is also being released with a live action web series would be released with weekly episodes titled as Spartan Ops. The game is due for a November 6, 2012 release. Details of Grifball were revealed in the recently held PAX 2012 in Seattle where gamers got the glimpse of the gaming mode. Microsoft-backed 343 Industries is expected to retain the glory of the game with its consistent efforts in improving the game. Its real success, however, can only be gauged upon its release.… Read the rest

Halo 4 Weapons’ Range: Details Revealed; Mean Machine on Display!

Even as 343 Industries plans to take on the gaming industry with their version of the Halo franchise, a glimpse is offered at their weapons arsenal and the range just seems awesome to say the least…

Microsoft, in its usual style, has been revealing much planned information bytes about its latest product, Halo 4, which is being developed by 343 Industries. The Halo franchise till now had been a brainchild of Bungie Industries, who have been left out in the lurch with this version. Bungie, on the other hand, plans to make a comeback next year with something which challenges its previous work. Meanwhile, 343 Industries have revealed a range of weaponry, which would be part of the multiplayer mission.

Some of the notable references include the standard Assault Rifle, which can fire continuously without offering break to the victim. Its potency is still questionable as compared to the complete range. Another rifle in the set is the standard Battle Rifle, which is a better weapon for combat. The sniper rifle completes the triad of rifles in this battle. The trailer shows the detailed DMR, which has been part of the UNSC’ weapons system just like the Rocket Launcher, which is the M41 Surface-to-Surface Rocket Medium Anti-Vehicle/Assault Weapon. To show its attack capability, the trailer even shows the player attacking an assault vehicle and blowing it to smithereens. A similar effect is also brought in by the heavy attack capability of the Sticky Detonator, which takes time to orient itself but delivers an impressive impact.

The only thing that one gets amazed at is the use of the new shotgun introduced in the fight sequences. After all, it has a rustic appeal but looking at the setting of the Halo franchise, it seems like ‘old school’. A similar weapon is the SAW Machine gun, which can make the battlefield pleasing for the gamer.

And when we come to the hi-fi section that makes the game worth its name, you have the Spartan Laser, typical stuff of the Halo games.  The most potent of the set is the Rail Gun, which can turn heads in a battle and really turn it around for the gamer. The only setback is its rebooting time that can affect the game play. But you get to have the fun of seeing the opponent disappear in just one shot!

As with all weapons, their design is also based on the distance and the impact required. Hence, choose wisely while in combat! Of course, when everything runs out, do use the Magnum; it would also be part of your weaponry as well. And yes, if you are expecting something more out of this trailer, then it also shows the points garnered with kills and of course, a mean game play. Come November 6, 2012, one can see them in action. Although, the online action series would be airing a good month before the game’s release, one is hoping for some more previews of John-117 aka Master Chief and his exploits.… Read the rest

Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn leaves fans in the lurch!

The initial rushes of Halo 4 were one of the most anticipated videos to hit the online territory in recent times. For a game to be released in the fall of 2012, Halo 4 is gathering quite a steam in terms of its preparations. Those who have been following the thread will realize that 343 Industries is warming up the audience to the events of November 13 when the game will actually see the light of the day.

The latest trailer on the live action series details about the background to the edition but has received a wide amount of disparate responses. Many fans have recently posted a wide variety of comments regarding the costume and the lack of a good set of actors for the prime roles in the web series. Many fans feel that the series seems to be a half-hearted approach to the franchise, which has spawned out movie, books and more such entities.

Although, many Halo fanatics have still appreciated such a gesture from Microsoft to promote this game. Their love for the game supersedes any other emotion or gimmicks associated with it. The concept of the online series is expected to draw a young audience which could possibly feel attracted to the series and then opt for the game. The trailer offers glimpse of the UNSC military academy and the life of a young cadet who would also be a part of the game. The first trailer focuses on his life at the academy and his first interaction with John-117 a k a Master Chief. The unceremonious meeting occurs at a juncture where the academy is attacked by the Covenant and although none of the attackers are clearly visible in the trailer, one can see, forms descending from the skies which could possibly indicate the ‘ancient evil’  much discussed in the earlier trailers. While one could easily say, it is not a ‘Dark Knight’ finish to the venture, but the producers have tried to give  a touch of realism to the series, even hiring the 6’8”-tall Vancouver actor, Daniel Cudmore, to fill in the shoes of Master Chief. The sudden drop in fan expectations is not surprising considering the fact that the hardcore fans would be looking forward to a more impressive web series for their favorite game.

It is too early to say that the trailer may not serve its purpose since the Microsoft-backed venture is just a step towards the game. The online web series which was initially planned to go live on Halo Waypoint and Machinima on October 5, 2012 would now also be available in stores and through online retail options. This news was recently revealed on Halo Bulletin by Kevin Grace, writer and Managing Editor of 343 Industries as part of their promotion drive. So,even if you miss the chance with the limited edition, you can always have a copy of the edition separately. The fact that there is so much discussion on the trailer itself makes one realize that the game would be a sure winner!… Read the rest
